Wardaemonic Interview

  • 1. Can you give us an update on what has been going on since the release of the new ep, a couple of months back?
  • 1 - The ep release was to coincide with our American tour, to give our new audience an updated idea of our modern sound. The reception was warm and the Americans seemed to warm to our shows. We also had another festival appearance in Adelaide, so we had to rehearse hard for that and also prepare our new setlist for supporting Enslaved in October.
  • 2.How would you describe the musical sound of the new ep that was released a couple of months back and also do you feel that you have improved as musicians with the new release?
2 - The new sound of Wardaemonic is more straight forward, more direct. We stand by everything we've released but we feel this is a precursor to our strongest material yet. It's more consistent and slightly more death metal than former works. The band are ever improving as musicians, as we are not regressives and put huge focus on a tight live show with polished musicianship. Our new singer and guitarist are very competent and share our vision of achievement.
3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the new release explores?
3 - The lyrics on the latest release are a very mature prose. Written by Maelstrom, they deal with hopelessness, isolation and the pursuit of futile dreams, to which I think we can all relate. They are formulaic, tightly phrased and now feature parts especially written for our dual backing vocalists.
    4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name Wardaemonic?
4 - Wardaemonic was a phrase coined by founding member Regnator (05-12). I believe it describes our fervour and relentlessness. It was also a name not yet taken by another band. You may have seen the phrase around in Impiety or Daemonised songs, but a Google search might yield that they are server bots used to keep MIRC channels free of Idle users ...
    5. Recently you did an U.s tour, what are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
5 - The US was very good to us. Put together by our good friends at Signature Riff, the tour featured a debut festival performance at Martyrdoom 2013 in NYC, which i'm sure was the highlight. A close second for me had to be Columbus Ohio, great crowd and great supports. A very worthy expenditure for us.
    6. DO you have any touring or show plans for the future?
6 - Aside from the Enslaved support in October, we have another festival in Melbourne in April. But we're looking to get overseas again following the release of our new album in 2014. More local shows will be a necessity, but we try to minimize those.
    7. The new ep and the last album where self released, do you have any plans on working with another label in the future?
7 - The EP was self released so as to limit its impact. It was almost a pure promo for the US as we didn't think our previous works represented our new idiom. We have our eyes on a good international label who we believe have theirs on us.
    8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
8 - The first two Wardaemonic albums garnered positive attention for the band the world over. Reviews were quite favourable, especially in Europe and Australia. Our most recent work has not been made available for review, although it sold quite well on the US tour.
    9. What is going on with the other musical projects these days?
9 - The members of the band are involved in a few different projects. Our bassist plays in DeathFuckingCunt with the drummer, our guitarist is a long time member of The Uncreation and our drummer plays also in Nexus, Xeper from Italy and has a new project in the works with members of notable American death metal bands.
10.What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
10 - The new materials will be hopefully faster and better produced, as while we never want to lose the edge, I personally like to be able to hear what I'm playing. Having new songwriters and a different lyricist will obviously shift the balance somewhat. Expect it to be heavier and denser.
    11. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
11 - The tastes of the main writers now will come through, those being more death metal. But the band listens to all sorts of things. The only discerning rule is that we only listen to artists of integrity, as it's easy to tell when a band is playing music for the wrong reasons. For example, the tour soundtrack included everything from raw primitive black, hyper death, triumphant power, classic orchestral and even 70's progressive material.
12.How would you describe your views on Occultism?
12 - Black metal is very strong on beliefs, but as Wardaemonic are atheist: we can only speak for ourselves. Other bands may find these things useful tools but we're quite realist, both in lyrical content and philosophy.
13.Outside of music what are some of your interests?
13 - Varied. Our drummer produces other bands in his studio. Our bassist plays football. 3 members read fantasy books. 4 members keep fit with gym, diet or sports and our guitarist attends regular orchestral recitals.
14.Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
14 - Expect nothing less than our best work everytime. Our live show has gone from strength to strength, and with 2.5 hours of material to draw from you never know what we're capable of ...
